Review of the Hunter 33_77-83 by Allan Gengler

Year built 1978
Location of boat Ruskin, FL
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. Of all the older Hunter's I've looked at I like the lines of the 33. I also prefer older boats because the glass was laid thicker.
Gear that's been added Not yet.
Structural or complex improvements No, but the previous owner reiforced the mast step.
The boat's best features The Hunter 33 sails beautifully. I'm not a racer and I enjoy the easy way it makes through the water. My wife and I were taken by the cabin layout. The fold down table is a real plus and we both liked the head aft, instead of by the V-berth.We looked at many boats in the 30 to 35 foot range and like the Hunter 33 the best, for the price range. There were some that sold for $100,000 plus we liked better, but they were just dreams on the horizon.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The deck has several cracks and chips. But that's to be expected from a boat built in 1978 and sailed around Florida and the Bahamas.
Sailing characterisitcs The 33 is not as tender as some 30's I've been on. I like to feel the boat has some substance in rough weather.
Motoring characterisitcs I believe a 3-bladed prop was put on before buying the boat so I've not experienced any of the sluggish behavior mentioned on other reviews.
Liveability It is a very comfortable cruising boat for a couple. Mostly it's just me and my wife in Tampa Bay or the Gulf of Mexico and we find it fine. As V-berths go it's fairly comfortable and the fold down table is a great plus. The head is of adquate size, unlike some I've experienced in even larger boats.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I've only called them about replacing the emergency tiller and, although they said that none are available through them, one could be made easily. They then gave me the instructions on how to make one.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
