Review of the Hunter 33.5 by Paul M. Giblon

Year built 1989
Location of boat Westbrook CT
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1993
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It has been a great boat, easy to maitain and sail. I frequently solo the boat in light to moderate air with no problem. It has to be the most responsive boat oon the water with that giant rudder. Also fast with its fractional, oversize rig.
Gear that's been added Added a 150 genoa, gps, stereo, new interior cushions
Structural or complex improvements None needed
The boat's best features Ease of use, maintaiance, speed over the water. The design is also still current after 10 years.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Had to put some glass near the stuffing box as drippings were bypassinng the intended drain area and ending up on the galley floor. The fixed window/hatch in the main saloon leaked and needed replacing. That was probably the worst design flaw.. The boat is underpowered with the Yanmar 2g but Hunter corrected in latter years with the 3G. The seat cushions were inferior and neede replacing after 5 years. Mostly minor stuff. No fuel guage is an annowance.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails very well particuarly in light air after adding the 150. Seldom passed by other boats. Would have liked two reefs instead of one in heavier air due to the talll rig. I have seen some compalints about the tall rig thing but if you want a shorter rig get a Catalina and be bored.
Motoring characterisitcs Moderately underpowered but otherwise handles very well. Backs superbly, better than any single screw powerboat.
Liveability Very livable. Spend most weekends aboard. Needs more drawer space in the galley.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No need to contact them
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from Tidewater in Havre De Grace MD Good job here. Tony T Did a nice job.
