Review of the Hunter 33.5 by Elana C. Muir

Year built 1994
Location of boat Fredericktown MD
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. The dealer, Tidewater Marine Havre De Grace is superb. Not one request that I had involving minor problems in the first year was not taken care of promptly. After two years I discovered a problem where a fitting leaked on the water tank. The leak caused water to build up in front of the bulkhead containing the water tank. Hunter had not drilled a drain hole for this bulkheaded area to drain into the bildge. The accumulated water from the leak caused the wood supporting the tank to rot out. Tidewater told me to contact Hunter. I felt they should have put in a drain hole which would have prevented accumulation of leaking water or condensation. They all agreed, fixed the boat promptly at no charge to me. No regrets. Love the boat!
Gear that's been added Auto pilot tied to GPS, dodger
Structural or complex improvements Nothing terribly complex.
The boat's best features Two separate cabins. Adequate room for two adult couples. Nothing has to be folded down, removed out of the way to accommodate two couples.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The bulkhead problem related to above which Hunter took care of promptly. I have another water problem in the galley, puddle shows up on the floor in front of the sink and I cannot trace the source at this time.I had a problem with the stanchions. They are sealed and water still got inside. One winter there was enough water accumulated inside that when it froze two stanchions pushed the nylon plugs up so hard as to cut the lifelines. I had to replace two stanchions
Sailing characterisitcs Sails great. Only downside is an occasional dead pan pounding if a wave is spaced just so. This is not a big problem.
Motoring characterisitcs I think a three bladed prop might cause less vibration. I have been told by a fellow 33.5 owner who added one that the boat ran much smoother. He claims that the two bladed prop is too close to the hull and this causes added vibration. Steers very well in forward or reverse.
Liveability One of its best features. At the boat show nothing in its length range compares to the space
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Super people to deal with. Very fair.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Tidewater Marine Havre De Grace. I can't say enough about how good they are. Call Tony Tumas!Service is outstanding, prompt and they do what they say they will do.
