Review of the Hunter 33.5 by Ray Paonsha

Year built 1988
Location of boat NEYC Cleveland Ohio
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Racing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 6
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1989
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes and no. It's a great day sailor and cruise boat but for racing it is a challenging boat to win with. The fractional rig and the swept back spreaders restrict pointing ability when sailing close hull and full use of the main when going down wind. The boat does reach well. Also the keel design, winged bulb, only works when your heeled over about 35 degrees. other than that its a great boat to sail.
Gear that's been added Took main winches and moved them aft and added biger Lewmar winches as primaries. Rigged it for a spinnaker. Redid back stay. Put cable block on bottom of top piece of backstay. Ran another cable from one side to about halfway to the other side than attached a double block and tackle the rest of the way down. Works great and is light weight enough that it doesn't bend the mast. Installed folding prop.
Structural or complex improvements blended keel into where it attaches to bottom of boat.
The boat's best features iexpensive-easy to maintain-well built (no major repairs)
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. engine shut of cable
Sailing characterisitcs doesn't point-doesn't go down wind-dosen't move in light wind
Motoring characterisitcs motoring is motoring
Liveability great boat to live in
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) great - they were very helpful when ever I needed help or directed me to who ever could help me.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I commisioned the boat myself but the dealer didn't stand behind the warrenty items that I fixed.
