Review of the Hunter 33_77-83 by Brad James

Year built 1982
Location of boat New Bern, NC
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Not sure at this point because of all the repairs that have been needed.
Gear that's been added Mostly replaced things. Boat had not been cared when I got it. Upgraded water pump, water heater, batteries, toilet, faucets, hoses, depth sounder, portlight lenses, screens, recovered interior cabin walls.
Structural or complex improvements Removed water heater (had to crush it to get it out of locker)and replaced it with a new smaller-capacity 120 volt water heater. Added extra battery and 12-volt outlet to space created by new water heater. Removed alcohol stove and replaced it with an electric cooler and an extra house battery.
The boat's best features Sails well, points well.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Not crazy about backstay location (much prefer the newer B
Sailing characterisitcs As mentioned before, it points well and is pretty fast for a cruiser.
Motoring characterisitcs A little underpowered with the Yanmar 2GM, also walks in reverse.
Liveability Standard layout is nice, comfortable.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Helpful. I have called them a couple of times to find replacement parts. Unfortunately the steering mechanism company is out of business.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Make sure you get a survey.
