Review of the Hunter 33 by Taffy 3

Year built 2005
Location of boat Hull, Massachusetts
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2022
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes.
Gear that's been added Anchor windlass, transom door, outboard hoist and holding bracket, composting head, folding 2 blade propeller/Flexofold.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Roller Furling Main. She sails dry and doesn’t pound like some of my previous boats.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I found one of the motor mounts is totally missing the washers and nut that hold it on…looks like it may never have been installed. I do not like the stern design at anchor/mooring, as it slaps the waves and is annoying especially if you’re resting or trying to sleep. I’ve tried tying some noodles together and hauling under the stern, but with limited success. I might try one of those floating pads. I’m not a Raymarine fan, and my chartplotter and autopilot stopped working last year, only to boost my dislike of their products.
Sailing characterisitcs Points well and is fast on any kind of beam reach. Mine has the deep keel, which I really didn’t want because of my sailing area and mooring location, but haven’t had any issues.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors at 2200 rpm doing 6 knots with a clean bottom. With the fixed 3 blade I needed to turn 2600 rpm for same speed. There seems to be more vibration with the 2 blade folding prop, but that may be due to the motor mount missing the nut and washers. Let you know this summer (2024).
Liveability Pretty decent, especially knowing these are built to a price point. That being said, way better than the build of Bennetau and Jeanneau. Could use a few more cabinets.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Closing in on 20 years old and I can’t find a hairline crack or any spider cracks in the stress point areas of this boat. I like the design and layout. My wife was sold on the perch seats and custom cushions.
