Review of the Hunter 40.5 by Gripper

Year built 1997
Location of boat Long Beach, CA
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2016
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes!
Gear that's been added All new sails plus a CODE 0 and a 165 Asymmetrical. Installed a new sole. New dodger, and canvas all around.
Structural or complex improvements None.
The boat's best features Sails wonderfully downwind. Into wind is good but not fantastic. The cabin interior is absolutely beautiful, spacious, and well thought out. Great looking lines on this boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Fridge drain leaks. Have to keep eye on the bottom of cooler to ensure water does not escape and spill on floor. Hairline cracks on gelcoat are common and have to be keep after.
Sailing characterisitcs Reef early on this model. The main is very large. I reef at 17 knots or so and see the same speed.
Motoring characterisitcs I have an autostream feathering prop and the boat reverses in a straight line. Maneuverability is really good. Tight turning circle. No weather helm. The engine is a Volvo 50. Very quiet - I have a well insulated engine compartment.
Liveability I have the full aft cabin with lots of room with port and starboard closets.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No direct dealings with Hunter. Hunter Owners.com is the BEST!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Great experience with the broker here in Southern Cal.
Other comments Cleanest and Best boat EVER!
