Review of the Hunter 28.5 by mangoldiger

Year built 1989
Location of boat Palm Beach Florida
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2019
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I have trouble with turning back time but I am positive that the purchase elevated my boating experience.
Gear that's been added New, larger built in A/C under companionway.
Structural or complex improvements just engine work, replacing exhaust elbow with riser and fastening the many bolts everywhere (hundreds)
The boat's best features it is the most practical sailboat for just fun day-sailing, weekends, short vacations, not too large not too small, comfortable yet sporty
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. getting the main up all the way until I scrubbed the track clean and lubricated it. I wish there was a winch on the mast to use with main halyard its a well made boat if you do the proper upkeep
Sailing characterisitcs excellent sailing for a cruising boat I have sailed in practically no wind and in gusty 25 knots she can handle it all great sailing with 130 jib alone in winds above 10 knots, even upwind
Motoring characterisitcs excellent with a 2 blade prop speed is 5.25 at 2100 rpm and 5.9 at 2400 rpm would only need full power 2900 rpm if going against strong wind, current consumes about 0.4 gal/hour at 2100 rpm backs up under power just like a car ☺☺
Liveability for weekends and short camping style vacations - excellent
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) n/a
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought this boat from Karl Bradleys wife, he is on this forum, after he passed away
Other comments I have considered larger boats but if you think it through you do not get much more form a 34 footer, only exception if you would live on it... but this 28.5 is so much easier on the hands, the back and the wallet - most practical fun performance cruiser on earth ☺☺
