Review of the Hunter 460 by hosemandc

Year built 2000
Location of boat Ketchikan Alaska
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2014
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes because the price was right.
Gear that's been added North Sail Asymmetrical G-2 with top down furling system. Upgraded all electronics Raymarine c-127, Digital Radar, EV-400 Autopilot, A-7 at nav station, I-60 Instruments, and soon to add Selden Whisker pole system. Blue Sky Solar charger and Solar panels added to Bimini top.
Structural or complex improvements Not yet but may add fiberglass to the anchor locker.
The boat's best features Very stable platform for cruising and heavy chop.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Plenty of gel coat cracks around the vessel. Often times wishing I had a backstay. Engine bay is unforgiving and difficult to get a mechanic to return. Had to remove engine mount to change raw water pump. Taking apart the galley cabinet to get at vital parts like the impeller is horrible. STBD side seating chairs take away room for sea berth but are comfy at the dock.
Sailing characterisitcs Smooth sailing, very powerful and easy to trim. Reefing is a breeze with furling main. Downwind sailing in following seas can be quite challenging in 20 plus knots of wind. Vessel handled great in 35 to 40 knot wind in the Gulf of Alaska.
Motoring characterisitcs Plenty of power to cruise at 7-8 knots and still only use .5 to .75 gallons per hour. 76hp 3 blade prop.
Liveability Plenty of room. storage for clothing a bit of a challenge.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Never called Hunter personally. Utilized dealer for that and had great results.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Great experience with a Canadian Broker.
Other comments Have a removable backstay option for open ocean blue water sailing.
