The boat's best features Ease in single-handing with fractional rig, cabin's open layout with standing headroom (6 ft +) in galley and salon, natural airflow from fore hatch to aftcabin hinged skylight, open (sugar scoop) transom
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The mast started to rip away from its seat on the coach roof five seasons on during a week-long cruise where it experienced very high winds one day(30-35 knots). Manufacturer US Spars (Florida)claimed to have never seen this sort of damage before. The spar's warranty had expired by then. It is my opinion that the dealer's commissioning crew put excessive pre-bend into the mast, thus giving added stress to it from day one. At the time, they said this was done to standard specs. By then, my dealer had gone bankrupt. The interface of mast and seat continues to creak under sail. I think the stanchions could be bedded more firmly into the deck. The unpressurized water pumps (galley and vanity) are often very finicky.
Sailing characterisitcs It tracks well closehauled and is a pleasure to sail on a broad reach. Due to its fractional rig and working jib, running can be tedious. It has a gentle amount of weather helm. It rides well in following seas and with ample freeboard is quite dry in the cockpit when countering seas up to about 20 knots.
Motoring characterisitcs The standard 14-hp Yanmar has served me will getting into and out of marinas and in the open.
Liveability When cruising, I usually have two crew along. The aft cabin tends to be catch-all for everyone's stuff, but is still enough space for one to sleep in there at the end of the day. I like the open concept in the cabin from companionway to the bow. Lots of stowage space under the berths and in the enclosed head for a boat of this length.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any There was some misunderstanding with the dealer about the required factory installed options, but he was always courteous and ready and willing to make up for the mistakes after launch. He also directed a prospect to buying my previous boat who turned out to be its new owner!
Other comments Hunter thoughtfully threw in a lot of extras at the point of sale - 6 lifejackets, flare gun and flares, horn, anchor and rode, dishware, fire extiguisher and informative 3-ring owner's manual. They encouraged initial year feedback and seemed to care about owner satisfaction.
