Review of the Hunter 170 by John

Year built 2006
Location of boat Northern Minnesota
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in Whit
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes - I bought it for my wife as a 50th birthday present. She grew up sailing in Maine and since we have retired on a midsized lake in MN I have been bitten by the bug. We love the boat - have no issues with cracks (yet - hopefully never) and take her out 4 or 5 times a week between June 1 and Sept 1...
Gear that's been added Looking to add a flag...like several options we have seen by fellow 170 owners here in the forums. Otherwise it is just like she came from the factory - except that we have the spinnaker kit.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Open cockpit, comfortably seats 5 or 6, boom well above heads of those seated in cockpit, rigging well thought out and works well.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Ran the centerboard into a sandbar the first year - broke the little blue "safety" tie down that but still functions fine and see no need to replace...
Sailing characterisitcs Sits on the mooring well - high winds and waves but never had an issue (she did lift the mooring and float it away once - that was interesting - but she just re-moored herself when she got into shallow water at the other end of the lake). Have flipped it a couple of times to see how hard it would be if it happened...easy to pop up again. Runs before the wind well. We enjoy day sailing - but lake sailing is different - lot of the time the direction is not all that constant.
Motoring characterisitcs We do not have a motor - we sail onto and off of the mooring.
Liveability This is a small boat for living on...but for just getting on the water and enjoying - hard to beat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) NA
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any White Bear Boatworks was excellent to deal with. I would recommend them to any and will buy there again over time.
