Review of the Hunter 28 by Greg Fothergill

Year built 1993
Location of boat Vancouver British Columbia
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2011
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? definitely! Great sailboat to learn on ... Very forgiving and easy to handle. my wife and I find it luxury weekender and I solo a lot as well. handles the Pacific Northwest waters well, instils confidence. Not your typical 28 foot, this is a big boat feel yacht.
Gear that's been added PO installed everything I could want including electric windlass with 150 feet of chain, diesel furnace, fridge/freezer, inverter, solar panel, auto-pilot with wireless remote. Bimini/ dodger, Stern Rail Seats, Cockpit cushions, BBQ. 8 foot dingy sits up on the swim steps without need of Davits securing to the rail... Very nice!
Structural or complex improvements Windlass required re- design of locker ... Worked out very well.
The boat's best features Solid coastal sailor, handsome boat with the wide beam and walk-through transom, (Sure makes dingy function easy). Furling,Dutchman, full baton main with double reef make for easy handling of sails and all lines to cockpit, traveller position etc well placed for single handling. Interior layout is very comfortable with amazing amount of space for a boat this size. I do not have any problems with the small head/sloping floor you hear complaints about. Everything is easy and comfortable enough.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing so far ... 39 trips so far and no troubles.
Sailing characterisitcs I am still learning, having never sailed before, but I seem to average 5.5 to 6 knots on a close haul in 15 knot winds. beyond 15 knots of wind I reef and double reef at 20. I often have the rail in the water ( fun) and feel safe in strong winds and 8 foot seas. I have yet to get caught in really serious weather. I have been running 110 percent Genoa but just purchased a new 150 from North Sail so we will see how the light wind sailing improves. When the wind fills the sails and the diesel shuts off I go to a special place!
Motoring characterisitcs The Yanmar is a great motor ... 1.2 liters per hour doing 5.8 knots typical at 2800 rpm. A few drips that I am ignoring for now. prop-walk is to port in reverse works out well for my slip or I can use neutral to mitigate. has a couple of rpm that vibrate so avoid those levels. Quiet motoring with all the insulation.
Liveability I like the V-Berth for sleeping as it feels open and spacious being part of the main cabin. PO installed memory foam and leather seating so very plush. alcohol stove is slow but adequate and is supplemented by the BBQ on the stern rail. Hot showers! House battery's 6 volt in series have never run down on me yet. Movies on the IPad and Music from the Bose Sound Dock are a great addition to the ship stereo system. Floating condo ... Home away from home!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Only called once with question about VIN and they went all out to give me answers and even sent me the original brochure from 1993. Everything I hear about Hunter service has been good.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any previous owner bought this boat in 2005 for 65K and then added 30K in accessories. The market no longer bears that price point so he could not recover all of his investment but had to sell due to injury. private sale and I used his survey done for insurance purposes but the boat is so well maintained I had no concerns.
Other comments I have the Wiing Keel design giving me access to 3 foot 8 inches draft anchoring and beach. Love it!
