Review of the Hunter 28 by Steve Ullrich

Year built 1991
Location of boat Hansen's Harbor, Lake Pepin, Mn
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2010
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I can single hand her without a lot of difficulty. Balanced sail plan. Handles well under sail or power. (Yanmar 2GM20)
Gear that's been added No. Had depth and speed instruments when I bought her. Also had VHF radio.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Again, pretty easy to handle under sail or power. Nice cabin for her size. Can sleep four adults comfortably. Serviceable galley and head, though the head is a little small. Guests and family really like the salon table and horseshoe setee. Good ventilation with three hatches and five opening ports. Good lighting. Adaquate DC and AC systems. Only draws 3'9". The cockpit is capable of handling four adults and a couple of kids without making it impossible to handle lines and rigging easily. The walk through transom and swim ladder are popular and convenient.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I wish the pan under the stuffing box and engine were directly connected to the main bilge. They only empty indirectly to the main bilge when heeled over enough for any water in them to run over their edges.
Sailing characterisitcs Again, easy to handle under sail. Even when single handing her, which I often do. A little tender if you are over canvased. Reef early.
Motoring characterisitcs No issues on the open water. Manuvering around docks and fingers to get in a slip causes me some anxiety but I haven't crashed into anything yet. The 2GM20 is capable of stopping her or changing her direction quickly enough.
Liveability Good for overnight or weekends. A bit on the small side if you are looking for something to live aboard.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Crow's Nest Yachts. Oakdale, MN. Fair and very helpful. Honest yacht broker.
Other comments Love it so far. Fourth boat I've owned. O'Day 19, Hunter 23, Com-Pac 16/III, in that order. Best of the bunch.
