Review of the Hunter 420 by Brad Brown

Year built 2002
Location of boat San Diego
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2009
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? definitely - we did quite a bit of research; including consulting with Bob Perry, to buy this boat for our intended cruising south to Mexico beginning in 2012
Gear that's been added portable Honda 2000 generator for extended cruising
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features sails quite well to weather; able to point 20 degrees off the wind; excellent comfort below, especially the aft stateroom
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. have had continuing problems with one of the Sealand vacuflush heads; have reluctantly become an expert in repairs
Sailing characterisitcs sails well to weather; tends to become a bit overpowered in heavy weather
Motoring characterisitcs smooth four cylinder Yanmar - no problems
Liveability excellent - no boat surpasses this one for this length
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) actually had a very helpful response from Hunter. I had inquired as to any problems with forestays collapsing in heavy weather (a current 420 owner had had this problem) - and they pointed me to a Coast Guard web site on recalls - only small and few in number for the 420
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any excellent broker; Tom Mundy of Cal Pacific in San Diego
Other comments the Admiral loves it!
