Review of the Hunter 33 by Bruce Keller

Year built 2008
Location of boat Portland ME
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength Press here to select
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2009
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Sure...have had 2 Hunters before..'92 H30T and '94 H30T...I know what to expect, although this was a new boat, the others used
Gear that's been added Just the Mariner package...
Structural or complex improvements Nope
The boat's best features Low maintenance; very good sailer (fin keel);accomodations;Mainsail reefing
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Usual, but not desired, commissioning glitches: a few loose nuts and bolts and gauges but nothing serious...big problem with the helm...installed 7 deg twisted off rumb line...fix was offered, but decided to live with it rather than dig up all the electronics and mechanics involved...takes a little getting used to with the compass and all. Some parts are a bit lightweight, some over weight. Ice box is inadequate, so bring a cooler.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat is a bit more tender than my 30's, so the owner get's a little testy every now and then. I find the stock bimini in the way when trying tyring to beat the other guy...but upwind great, reach fine, down wind more challenging..have a drifter that makes up for that.
Motoring characterisitcs Large three blade and YM30 takes a lot of practice in close...but does well in heavy seas (up to 6') we get into once and awhile...do not get hull speed at 3300 rpm...must be me.
Liveability Have not overnighted much, but everything works well for the limited times we have been out...head can be considered a bit small for a 33.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) So far once needed a part...good 'ole Mike got me to the right source and part replaced (just a shower head from Scandvic) Hunter has always been good in this department.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Dealer did the best they could given the circumstances... This was their demo and had some prior use issues that showed up and delayed getting us up as fast as I would have liked, but all's well that end's well...
Other comments Wish I had more free time to really use her..we are at a Marina with 4 other Hunters in Casco Bay, and a fantastic Maine Hunter Sailing Association group nearby...just great!
