Review of the Hunter 290 by Adam Smith

Year built 2000
Location of boat Long Beach, CA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2007
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, we traded-up from a 1987 Hunter 28.5 and this H290 has the same footprint as our old boat but has much more space in the cockpit and below deck.
Gear that's been added Dinghy davits (best $1000 I ever spent) 1000w Inverter, Flatscreen DVD, Dodger, Plans to add a transom shower
Structural or complex improvements Replaced cooktop with Force10 oven
The boat's best features Walk-thru transom/swim step. Cockpit can fit 7 people with room to spare, Stainless arch keeps boom out of the way and is great hand-hold. The head is huge for a boat this size
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Holding tank sensor did not work, dealer replaced it, but had to add a deck plate in the sail locker to access. 4000+ Autopilot has some operational issues, seems to work best while motoring with just main sail.
Sailing characterisitcs 12-16 kts is comfortable, Over 18 and I prefer to reef.
Motoring characterisitcs Vibration below 1000, swings to port in reverse. Motors fine in most conditions
Liveability For a small family of 4, we can handle 4 days and 3 nights on a mooring with no problem, It's very liveable for it's size and compared to the H28.5 we had, it is 25% larger by design
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have contacted Hunter direct on where to find OEM accessories and they responded prompt as well.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any H&S was the dealer, they responded well to any issues I had. I would look to them first should I decide to trade-up to a larger boat in the future.
Other comments I am happy with this boat, sure, we could spend more and get newer/larger but for now, we have a nice looking, proud to show boat.. and we use it all the time.
