Review of the Hunter 41DS by Mike Shulco

Year built 2007
Location of boat NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2007
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added Small solar panel for topping off batts. over winter layup.Dingy davits installed, by Dealer works fine.
Structural or complex improvements so far so good
The boat's best features height and width. Very easy to have two couples on board. with the two heads and staterooms. Very easy to sail, but hard to move downwind. 10 to 15 knts. we are hard to beat, put let the wind die and so do we. She is definitley not a racing boat. But if you are looking for a liveaboard, look no further.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Leave the battens out of the main sail. O.K, O.K. we lose a knot , but bringing the sail in and out is no problem. We don't even have to be exactly into the wind, and even my wife has no problem winching her in.
Sailing characterisitcs I love to single hand my boat. Roller furling jib and main make it that easy.Give me 10 kts and we can easily do 7 kts. She points well and tacking is a snap with the 110 jib.
Motoring characterisitcs We motor at 8 kts at 2800 rpm. Backing up is a little more of a problem, but if you practice enough, you will get the hang of it.
Liveability Already did, Great.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not dealt with Hunter directly yet.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Waypoint Marine in NJ , Great
Other comments We like to go up the East River in NYC to Long Island Sound and cruise the lenght to Newport and back, I have no problems taking her up there and living for weeks exploring the harbors and Yacht Clubs. A great liveaboard boat.
