Review of the Hunter 410 by william stephenson

Year built 1998
Location of boat wiarton georgian bay canada
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in toro
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes..but would pay more attention before making final payment..this boat was a demo and there were many problems with things missing ie screens ..locker panels..refrigeration system didn't work properly..bottom didn't have epoxy and had minor osmosis..Hunter covered some of cost...
Gear that's been added yes ..a fixed three blade prop..a Campbell Sailor propeller..very happy with it..also replaced the electric windlass..original wasn't strong enough ..went to a 40 amp charger..a 4kw Fischer Panda generator..Algae X fuel conditioner units... also installed a shaft shark unit on the prop shaft ..also installed a deck wash system myself
Structural or complex improvements the chain plates were beefed up..done by Hunter under recall..this boat was featured in the Toronto Boat show Jan 2000..we replaced the fibreglass arch with a stainless steel one ..they also added a complete canvas enclosure and autohelm 6000..works great..the boat looks like a 2000 model
The boat's best features large and bright down below..large generous cockpit..sails well especially on a beam reach..points reasonably well..motors smoothly ..I run it around 2500rpm's..will handle rough water if properly trimmed etc
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. major problem with refrigeration..after getting quite testy..and two seasons of buying ice ..they replaced entire unit..works good now ..the nut on steering wheel kept working loose ..have fixed it and is ok now..the hull etc is solid..I have been on the rocks twice ..boat is bullet proof..
Sailing characterisitcs I left Canada in early Sept 04..did the Great Circle route..down through Chicago..to Mobile ..down Florida..to Dry Tortugas..to Bahamas ..back up the ICW..and home the end of June 06 ..great experience..boat held up very well ..I now sail Georgian Bay for most of the summer..live aboard
Motoring characterisitcs my boat has a 50hp Yanmar..motors smoothly ..especially since I went to a 3 blade prop ..motored about 13 hours down into Nassau ..huge waves..10 ft..did a lot of motoring doing the Great Circle..I also recommend the Algae X system..cleaner burning..cleaner exhaust.etc
Liveability great boat for living on..there is ample room for our gear etc..we use the aft head shower area for temporary storage..we often have company..seems to be adequate space
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I owned a Hunter 30..1989..bought it new..kept it 10 years..I have found Hunter very good on helping and advising..would buy another ..
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any dealers are guys that sell boats..you have to watch closely..make sure they listen and follow up..hold back money until you are happy
Other comments I like the boat..the company..and the dealer because they now know me..being 72 and in good health I intend on sailing for a few more years ..have thought about downsizing but that isn't easy..besides I really know this boat. .what it can do and what it has been through
