Review of the Hunter 30_88-94 by Joe and Nancy Knapp

Year built 1989
Location of boat Forked River, New Jersey
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1994
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I think that the Hunter 30 and other Hunters in general give you great value for your dollar.
Gear that's been added I haven't added anything but she came with roller furling, bimini top and cockpit cushions.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Low maintenance ( not a lot of teak),walk through transom is great and the aft cabin has more room than many larger and more expensive boats.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The head holding tank is not very large, the engine could use a little more power, the fuel gage is very hard to see and I too have knocked off the bow lights coming into the fuel dock.
Sailing characterisitcs I think she is easy to sail. With a 155% headsail tacking certainly takes two but who goes out alone anyway? We can do better than seven knots on a good day and actually broke eight knots surfing a wave coming into Barnegat Inlet once.
Motoring characterisitcs The 16 hp Yanmar could use a little more power. It is hard to get past 5.5 knots.
Liveability We spend weekends on the boat, docked at night, with a six and eight year old. We find the liveability to be good. We use the Vbirth for storage and the kids sleep on the push down (and I mean hard to push down)table in the main cabin. Add a twelve inch TV/VCR combo and we are set.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter was very helpful in replacement owner's manual.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought my boat through a large Hunter dealer in Havre de Grace Md. "Tidewater" did a great job finding the boat I wanted at the price I wanted to pay.
