Review of the Hunter 31 by William J Brown

Year built 2007
Location of boat Buffalo, NY
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, although it is a close choice with H33. The cockpits differ primarily due to configuration of cockpit table. In my view H31 was better for my day sailing needs with guests who are not necessarily boaters.
Gear that's been added No since boat was well equipped through promotional offers but did add bimini (easily installed with Hunter arch) plus vented winter cover (first one for me - I'd do it again).
Structural or complex improvements No, none needed so far.
The boat's best features Ability to easily solo sail (which I do) which was factor in purchase and compared to other boats, roller furling main, the standard equipment which comes with the boat and promotional packages which were excellent buys.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. All equipment has performed well. The smaller jib takes some getting used to if like me you've had a 150 before.
Sailing characterisitcs Stable and well balanced.
Motoring characterisitcs 21 hp Yanmar does fine but tops out at around 5.5 knots.
Liveability Excellent day sailer, cabin well equipped, and very good for weekend with 3 maybe 4 onboard.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No experience yet, dealer has been superb as usual (RCR).
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any All experiences with RCR over a long period of time have been very good.
Other comments Very satisfied with purchase.
