Review of the Hunter 36 by Duncan Foster

Year built 2006
Location of boat Marina del Rey CA
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 5-6
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I would buy this boat again but I would take more time to examine the dealer packages and evaluate the differenct systems to make sure they are well designed and functional.
Gear that's been added Raymarine E120 chartplotter / GPS / 4K Radar / AIS / autopilot / Sat Radio / 110 Belmar Alternator/Regulator/dual-charge with starting battery /2000 charging monitor. dodger/bimini/custom full canvas 20" LCD/DVD with surround sound and sub. Stainless custom aux engine mount/GPS/Sat antennas/engine hoist/barbeque mount/pedestal equipment mount with extra wiring access tube
Structural or complex improvements We adding an extra wiring stainless tube to the steering pedestal. There is not enough access for all the wiring connected to the Raymarine E120 on this boat.
The boat's best features The interior is nicely finished and pleasing to live in at the slip. She is laid out for maximum livability. The boat inspires confidence as it very stable in all the winds we have experienced.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The hull lining behind the electrical panel needed to be fixed and refinished. The pedestal was not properly aligned and had to be corrected. The dealer quickly fixed these complaints as they are covered by Hunter.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails very well and is well balanced. The boat is a joy to sail in moderate air and with the Kiwi prop she will sail three knots in five notes of wind on a 30 degree tack.
Motoring characterisitcs We installed a Kiwi feathering prop on the 29 hp Yanmar diesel and when fully loaded with fuel and water and five crew we can sustain 6.7 kts @ 3200 rpm However the reverse thrust on this prop is fantastic and we can walk the boat easily stern first into the slip. We can stop the boat from four kts in one boat length.
Liveability The interior is nicely finished and pleasing to live in at the slip. She is laid out for maximum livability. The electric flush toilets work very well and with the new veriable speed water pump installed in the galley the water pressure is great in the showers. Aft cabin in a little low but the hatch overhead gives excellent air circulation. The boat has an abundance of lighting and 110/dc outlets
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have only called Hunter once and they declined to help me as they claim all battery issues are the responsibilities of the dealer. However any issues that were covered by the Hunter warranty were resolved quickly.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I have bought two boats from H & S Yachts in the last twenty years and the salesman Barry Wood has been a joy to work with. However the clowns in the service division are less than helpful. There were issues over the charging system's ability to charge the 2 (4d) ADM batteries provided by the dealership. The technical staff dropped the ball. Their position seems to be that it is ok to sell a marginally working systems and it is the responsibility of the boat owner to upgrade to a working charging system. Their attitude is poor and not customer friendly.
Other comments Review any dealer proposal with a tech to make sure you are getting working systems on your boat. All in all the Hunter 36 has been a dream and now that we have worked out all the bugs we are looking forward to years of happy sailing on her.
