Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Steve Ruell

Year built 1981
Location of boat Belfast Maine
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1994
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, we have been very happy with it. We find it very enjoyable to sail. The one we bought had been very well cared for and has not needed much repair, thoughthere are some systems which are agingand in need of upgrading.
Gear that's been added New freshwater pump, GPS, safety gear, soundproofing, antennas, solar vent, newupholstery, and have long wish list.
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features Good sailing performance, stiff andfast.Good conservative design, well arranged, easy to live with.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. General comments are that everythingworks but a few minor complaints:Ventilation needs to be improved.Engine noise and vibration levels are high.Narrow side decks are hard to walk on.Counter behind sink encourageswater to run into cupboard. Nav desk is a joke.
Sailing characterisitcs
Motoring characterisitcs Difficult to handle when docking in current and wind, maybe due to my inexperience. Hard to stop, hard to predict behavior in reverse.
Liveability Generally good, though we have mildewand head smells which we are trying toimprove. More space would be nice,of course. When under way with engine running the noise level below is quite loud. Otherwise very comfortable.
