Review of the Hunter 26 by joe

Year built 1984
Location of boat Mo
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, was looking at Chrysler 26's when I found the O'day. Was drawn to the classic lines of the boat and the setup of the interior. On the 1st sail could not believe how well she handled in light wind. 1st owner had installed wheel steering, 2nd owner took back to tiller, would like to see how the boat handles with a wheel.
Gear that's been added Lazy Jacks, dept/fish finder, updated Stero/dvd and speakers, replaced sails, added tiller tamer, replaced bilge pump and hoses. Replace alchol stove with propane 2 burner.
Structural or complex improvements redid wiring
The boat's best features handling, ease of sail, comfort of boat, enclosed head, easy boat to maintain. side decks are wide enough to walk on (with care)
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. need to go forward to raise sails, will be adding roller furling this fall, and also running main controls back to cockpit.
Sailing characterisitcs Stable boat to sail, great lines, looks fast and can be if you choose, but for sailing enjoyment cant be beat. Sailing mates have catlina 22 and 25, both love the O'day. Boat performs well in light winds, and can handle the 25k as well, would not push my luck, use the reefing point. Does want to head up in heaiver winds/gusts but if you are paying attention you can keep it under control. Once the boat is balanced it is a dream to sail, tiller handles very well.
Motoring characterisitcs Handles well with small outboard
Liveability Wonderful, am able to stay on the boat for a weekend with 3-4 people without feeling cramped. If I am by myself, boat gives me all the room I need for a week or two. Marina has bathrooms/showers, the small galley setup allows for cooking simple meals. Add in a protable A/C unit or heater (depending on time of year) and you have a great private place. The v berth is perfect for one person at 5'8", two can feel a bit cramped at times. The pull out in main cabin is a great space (tend not to use just because it restricts walking through cabin. Bench seats are nice and roomy as well, have one friend the ends up taking naps on the starboard bench evey time we go out (not drunk, just likes afternoon naps)
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Great boat, I am impressed with the 26, not a lot of them out there, glad I found one.
