Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Ted Keneklis

Year built 1978
Location of boat Door County, Wisconsin
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1988
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, Good boat for the price and it is very forgiving under heavy winds.
Gear that's been added Extra anchors with holder at bow, roller furling, solar vents in both deck hatches, autohelm when motoring, rope halyards, boom vang, edson table and glass holder, ladder steps, OB motor holder on stern rail, gas grill, winch boxes P
Structural or complex improvements see above. The fun part was taking out the old head liners and replacing them with auto carpet.
The boat's best features Stability.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Leaks around the toe rails, and the impossibility of going long distances in a straight line in reverse. Under powered engine. Had a broken valve spring early on which prevented engine from starting. Had engine pulled to fix it.
Sailing characterisitcs Over the past 10 years everything from 10 foot waves and 60 mile winds. Knocked down once with only the main up!
Motoring characterisitcs I hate reverse, and the engine noise which rattles the stove and all the beer in the cooler.
Liveability Great for two people. Tough when it rains and you have five people and a big dog on board.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter FLA is great always willing to answer questions and give suggestions. Once sent me new decals for the stern.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Yacht Works in Sister Bay is the place to buy and service and store your boat. Honest and friendly people who will help and exceed your expectations. Quality worksmanship.
