Review of the Hunter 240 by Dennis Lindemann

Year built 2003
Location of boat Tokyo Bay
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? No.
Gear that's been added No.
Structural or complex improvements Not yet. I plan to replace the rudder with a custom design.
The boat's best features Roomy interior. This is a great boat sitting alongside a pier.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rudder/tiller design is extremely poor. I've had 2 boats two years, and have had both boats need rudder replacements. The rudders split at the top and then break at the pivot hole. The jaws of the rudder head spread over time and create a lot of slop in steering. The max rudder angle isn't large enough. The down position of the rudder has to be adjusted by tensioning both the down- and up-ropes to make the steering stable: if you adjust the rudder all the way down, the bottom tip gets ahead of the rest and causes unstable steering. The tiller adjustment screw just doesn't accomplish it's job. Centerboard is too small and in the wrong place. Water ballast is not heavy enough.
Sailing characterisitcs Tender. Too much freeboard. Oversized sail plan and lack of bottom weight prevent this boat from sailing well at more than 10 knots. Way too much weather helm. Sails better reefed in any wind. Steering issues mentioned above prevent the helmsman from getting any sense of "feel" from the tiller.
Motoring characterisitcs I've used a 2-stroke Yamaha 8 and a 4-stroke Mercury 8, both sucessfully. High freeboard=lots of windage=difficulty trailering in a crosswind.
Liveability In a calm, well-protected marina: no issues. At anchor with some chop: very uncomfortable.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments I'd like to know the names of the principal design team that developed this boat....so that I can avoid their work in the future.
