Review of the Hunter 306 by Chris

Year built 2004
Location of boat Long Beach, California
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, definitely! This was our first sailboat, and we have been very pleased. The Hunter layout and design is fantastic. Very comfortable for 3 to 4 people. Our maiden voyage was a 5 hour sail up the coast of California to bring her home. Cold weather, rough waters, and a 20 knot headwind made the journey a bit tough to say the least. The Hunter handled it all with ease!
Gear that's been added No, it had already been outfitted with GPS and auto pilot. We haven't found anything else that we would need.
Structural or complex improvements None.
The boat's best features Comfortable design, great interior, easy to handle.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The instrument panel seems to draw more than the 10amp breaker will allow once it heats up. It has been popping consistently on every sail over the past few weeks. I can't determine the exact problem, so I'll have to get an electrician to take a look at it.
Sailing characterisitcs Very smooth and easy to handle.
Motoring characterisitcs The diesel engine is difficult to start when cold. When it's warm it fires up immediately every time.
Liveability We don't use it as a liveaboard, however, it's very comfortable and I wouldn't have a problem with it. I'm 6'-4" and find the headroom very nice for a 30' boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Did not deal with Hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We bought from a broker that primarily deals with Hunters. He was very helpful during the purchase process. He also happens to run a sailing school on Hunter 30's through 34's. As a result, we hired him for a couple of hours to show us the specifics of our new Hunter.
Other comments It's a great boat!
