Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Todd Blazis

Year built 1979
Location of boat Cape Cod Massachusettes
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I would buy a lighter displacement hull boat, probably a newer model Hunter. This boat has served my family and friends very well though. A great boat in the lower price spectrum.
Gear that's been added Added Adler Barbour refridgeration, Garmin 220, Autohelm 4000 , windspeed/apparent wind, depth, and knotmeter, Adjustable backstay, new North sails,
Structural or complex improvements Replaced 1 cylinder Yanmar with 1997 18hp 2 cylinder, Awlgripped hull, faired keel, awlgripped mast and boom
The boat's best features Very roomy interior, Nice layout for small family, sails nicely slightly off the wind,
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Backing in reverse is horrible until boat gets up to speed, tends to pull to port., Upwind performance is poor but have tweaked to get the best performance, poor drainage from cockpit seats aft always water standing.
Sailing characterisitcs Great off the wind reaching, poor upwind performance against other PHRF boats in my class, Slow in light air due to heaviness.
Motoring characterisitcs Very poor in reverse but turns nicely forward in tight areas. Does Hull speed 6knots
Liveability Very liveable down below, have spent many long weekends and weeks at a time cruising. Needs more fresh water supply, 12 gallon fuel tank a little small if motoring long distances, the largest interior of most older 30's
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very quick responses to technical questions and good archives of information for original boat
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any private sale
