Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Steve Bennett

Year built 1981
Location of boat Worton Creek, Md
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1993
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes....it has been a great value. have sailed in 30knot winds(reefed and furled) and have felt safe. it has been a great first cruiser and has helped formulate what i want and need in the next boat c
Gear that's been added gps/dodger/bimini/cruising spinaker
Structural or complex improvements mast post need attention..gathers rust. yanmar 2gm is too small...also agree with others on gally arrangement. i have also re-coversd alll the cushions and replaced all the ports.also put all new sanatation hoses in the head and removed the hot water system as we never used it.
The boat's best features does not really require alot of maintenence..sails well in a good breeze...was not overly expensive to get started with but did require some blister repair..i had the hull sandblasted which uncovered the majority of blisters but did not damage the gel coat and then recoated the hull..no blisters since...
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. see above
Sailing characterisitcs we have tried to bury the lee rail on windy days with little success as the boat with its shoal draft keel will head up first...sails well on most points...as far as motoring it could use a little more horspower on those few extreme days we get in the chesapeake..i have gotten used to port walk of the prop when backing into my marina slip..it will not back to starboard..either go straight or to port..so i just plan my landings that way...
Motoring characterisitcs
Liveability ok for two..have done more but gets congested on overnites with more than two...if i was keeping the boat much longer i would go to a propane stove..have now resorted to a single butane setup.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) always good at tidewater marina
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
