Review of the Hunter Vision-36 by Steve Dion

Year built 1994
Location of boat Rio Vista, CA
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes! These boats (Vision series) are very easy to sail. They will outrun most traditional rigs in light air. The accomodations are amazing for a 36' vessel.
Gear that's been added Instruments ST60 Tri-data (speed/depth), Raymarine 230 multi-station VHF, refrigeration (Isotherm SP), new fresh water pump, engine hour meter, new overhead lights (Alpenglow), Xantrex XC30 battery charger, new Gel batteries, Dodger, replaced aft foam mattress with a Latex mattress, new ground tackle (Delta Anchor + 50' chain + 250 of line), companionway cover.
Structural or complex improvements none
The boat's best features Unstayed rig. This makes sailing this boat very easy with the design of the mast it can take a good blow before you need to reef. As the wind picks up the mast will bend and spill off a lot of wind.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Deep reef has been a problem that has not been resolved.
Sailing characterisitcs moderate to medium winds. Boat handles well in winds up to 20 kts without reefing.
Motoring characterisitcs The engine is a 3JH2E and provides more than adequate power when motoring. Engine has proven to be very easy to start. I have has some problems with cross winds when docking.
Liveability Excellent weekend and extended liveability. Good privacy with guests aboard. We have converted some of the hanging closets to storage cabinets. I wish there was more storage.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have contact Hunter about some spare parts and they have been generally helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I purchased this boat from a broker in Stockton, Mo. (Spurgeon's). They sold the boat as new in '94. They also trucked the boat from Stockton, Mo. to Stockton, Ca. There was some gel coat cracking due to the transportation.
