Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by K. Conrad

Year built 1978
Location of boat Annapolis, MD
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I would give this boat more power. The Yanmar 12hp is not sufficient. Iwould locate the controls on the wheel housing and move the gauges further aft so they can be seen clearly on a bright day. Beyond that...nothing...she sails great in medium air
Gear that's been added Safty gear and updated rigging.
Structural or complex improvements I removed the skeg forward of the rudder. It had cracked over the years and filled with silt. I have found this boats handles 100% better in reverse as a result with no noticable affect on normal operations. I have been told by others that take the helm occasionally that the boat is a little
The boat's best features Basic hull design is solid.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Basiclly the boat is underpowered and handling could be better in reverse.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat points well in heavy air but does not respond as well as its class in light air.
Motoring characterisitcs Poor...at best.
Liveability Well laid out and roomy for an older boat. easy to play with and change if you are handy.
