Review of the Hunter 23.5 by Herb Kartanos

Year built 1993
Location of boat Lake Lanier, Georgia
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. This was a test. We recently moved to Georgia from the Northeast where we did our boating on the Atlantic coast. Were not sure we would like lake boating. Decided on sail boat that we could trailer if we wanted to move it elsewhere. Turns out we really enjoyed the boat this summer.
Gear that's been added No.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Spacious cockpit and cabin in a boat this size. Very stable when lake gets choppy due to much power boat activity. Centerboard allows entrance into shallow water for anchoring or beaching.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing yet.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat is a delight to sail in 3 to 10 MPH winds. At 10 MPH with full sails I experience 30 to 35 degree heel, this of course varies depending on the trim. When winds exceed 10 MPH gusting to 15 MPH I reef the main and take the jib down. This still allows good sailing speed with a more comfortable heel of 10 to 15 degrees, depending on trim, in the higher winds. This is a light sail boat, when the winds exceed 15 MPH I relax at the dock. My boat tacks well with main sail only, this way I can sail all day and never leave my seat.
Motoring characterisitcs My boat has a 5 HP Honda motor fixed in one position (not steerable). All steering is done with the rudder, it is easy to maneuver around the dock and in tight areas. At full throttle I will cruise at 6 to 6.2 MPH according to the GPS. I haven't checked the gallons of fuel burned per hour because it's so little I'm not concerned. I don't think I've spent $50 this whole season.
Liveability I consider it like camping. You will have shelter without the ants. It is spacious and comfortable for over nights and weekends for 2. But don't expect to cook meals, we usually bring food or order in from local businesses. The cabin is comfortable for up to 6 for visiting, but not for overnights.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No experience.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Good experience.
