Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by John Tesoriero

Year built 1980
Location of boat Toms River, New Jersey
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1994
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes! It has the space, comfort, features, performance and price we were looking for. Despite its age the boat has kept its appearance and is structurally sound.
Gear that's been added Lots of small stuff, but the best things I added were: a three bladed prop, lights and sound-proofing in the engine compartment, A squeeze bulb on the fuel line, an A/C battery charger, a larger thru hull (3/4
Structural or complex improvements The mast step is a problem. Compression from racing
The boat's best features The interior room and sailing performance
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The hull needed blister treatment when I got the boat but has not been a problem since. Engine access, especially to the stuffing box is awful. I am not looking forward to pulling the shaft if necessary, but understand that the engine can be raised and the shaft pulled forward? There is a curious 8-10
Sailing characterisitcs Boat works best with original 110% jib and main. Have tried larger sails but boat becomes unbalanced with much weather helm. I like to cruise so racing speed is not our concern. It can be single handed.
Motoring characterisitcs The Yanmar 2QM15 never quits, but is hard to start in cold weather. It is just (barely) enough power for most situations. The old engine on my boat smoked a little and could not get up to hull speed until I went to a 3-blade, 13 X 9 prop. The boat hates to back-up and will not go straight until there is some speed on. Makes for interesting family interactions when arriving at a new marina late in the day with stern in docking.
Liveability My wife and I are tall, so we love the headroom and especially the large v-berth, although there are some gymnastics involved in getting in and out of the v-berth when the inset is in place. Our teen age son Marc disappears in the quarter berth. The fold-up table in the main salon is great and gives us plenty of room when we need it or easily folds down to eat or play cards. The ice-box could be better insulated.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) They have been helpful when I needed to check on sizes of rigging, cables, etc. No other experience
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought the boat privetly
