Review of the Hunter 41DS by Ray Reinhardt

Year built 2007
Location of boat Great South Bay, NY
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definitely. The boat is better than I thought it would be. The extended height in the cabin is great. It gives the feeling of openness. All the appointments with the teak trim is very rich looking. It sails well and under power goes very fast (8.1 knots) with the 54hp Yanmar.
Gear that's been added 2KW Raymarine Radar, E80 Display on a Navpod in the cockpit, Navionics Chart Chip, GPS 125, ST8002 control head for autopilot with Type II Linear Drive Unit and S3G course computer, Dodger and full cockpit enclosure. Boat came with air-conditioning, bow thruster, 6KW Panda Generator, Freedom 20 Inverter, Bose 3-2-1 multimedia system, 15" Sole TV, folding wheel, salon table extension, separate freezer, 3 bladed prop, etc.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Openness of salon area, large cockpit with walk-thru transom, nice walkways going forward, excellent workmanship even though it is a production boat, dark blue hull, windlass was std equipment, Cat A designed, roller furling main and jib, nice speed during sailing and during motoring.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Minor problems that you always come across with a brand new boat.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails close to the wind (approx. within 30 degrees and close to 25 degrees of the relative wind). Boat is fairly level and takes the high gusts very well with not too much weather helm. Reaches hull speed in 20 knots of wind.
Motoring characterisitcs Fast during motoring with little pull to one side. 3 bladed prop performs great with the 54hp Yanmar. Great fuel economy at 2200RPM. Max RPM is around 3300. Speed about 6.5 knots at 2200RPM. Backing up is good. Bow thruster assists greatly especially in windy and tight turning conditions. Highly recommend the bow thruster.
Liveability With two bedrooms and two baths should be able to have two couples live comfortably for weeks on end. Should be great for long cruisers.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter was and continues to be my favorite Manufacturer. I previously had a Hunter 310 and now the 41DS. Every question I have is answered quickly, politely, and professionally. They are great folks.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any My dealer is LIYS of Bayshore, NY. Glenn, Christina, Andy, and Carol along with Jerry and George, and the owners (Bill and Mary Cook) are all great folks. They work hard to make sure you are satisfied.
Other comments Great boat and I am glad I bought her.
