Review of the Hunter 340 by Jim Russell

Year built 1997
Location of boat Pierre, SD
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, we would buy this model again. We might purchase the furling main, however, as it would give us infinitely more adjustments to handle the high winds that we have in the area.
Gear that's been added Please review my previous review written in 1997 that indicated the initial added equipment. In addition to that, we have added an air conditioner self installed (Mermaid), and would recommend this addition. Factory installed would have been easier, but installing it ourselves was not that difficult with air ducts feeding main cabin, quarter berth and v berth. We have replaced the main with a loose footed North Sail, and are adding a sail sack. I really prefer the loose footed as it allows more adjustment. We also added a dodger by Ameriseam and installed this, too, ourselves. Garmin GPS 160 and feed for a Garmin 76 Map. Cabin fans, additional cabin lights
Structural or complex improvements No Structural Changes
The boat's best features Interior, spaceousness of cabin and cockpit, excellent sailing in light winds, midship cleats, swim platform,
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Broke triple rope stop when I failed to take the pressure off the main halyard before opening the rope stop. Chalk one up to stupidity. However replacement alledgedly has the same hole spacing, even after 10 years. Will find out tomorrow.
Sailing characterisitcs Responsive, well balance weather helm with the new North Sail, need to douse main sail when winds exceed 40 mph as existing reef points still allows too much sail.
Motoring characterisitcs Runs at 3400 nicely doing 7 knots subject to wave action. Maintained that speed for 2 hours the other day when weather was closing in.
Liveability Great.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Support by Hunter staff has been exceptional both in advice on improvements, replacement parts (gel coat for nicks, etc.) and overall personal interest in how my boat was doing. After 9 years of dealing with them on this boat, and prior to that 5 years on a 30 Hunter, I could not think of a time they let me down. Great Company.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought boat from Florida Yachts. Service from them was excellent. They commissioned the boat in South Dakota. They specs they had on the boat were what they would have asked for if the boat was to be sailed in the ocean. Hence we had a number of upgrades on the boat when we received it including battery charger, batteries, etc.
Other comments We really have enjoyed our boat on our 200 mile long lake. We've sailed 110 miles of this lake, and would like to keep it a secret from the rest of the world. The Hunter we have is perfect for out use, and has come through some storms at anchor with flying colors.
