Review of the Hunter 146 by Daphne Moore

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? We found a 146 early this spring and couldn't resist it. It's an exciting boat, very responsive and fast. My husband races sailboats and was impressed by the design. At first our young son (8) was afraid when we heeled, but he got to love it. It seems tippy, but it's never gone over, just heads up into the wind. My original inclination was to buy the 170, and that would have been a good direction to go in for us simply because we have family and friends we want to take out sailing, and could use the extra room. I would definately buy a 146 for the purpose it was designed for, a fun sailing machine for 3-4 people. It has taught our son and I a lot about sailing, in a boat that inspires confidence (so light and literally full of flotation). I love the easy care hull, and it looks beautiful.  
Gear that's been added Ours came with a dealer installed motor mount, a mast float and a mainsail cover. The mainsail cover is wonderful, beautifully made and we use it every day since we tie up at a slip. The mast float gives us peace of mind, but we haven't tipped the boat, and so far we've manuvered the boat in and out of the bays (and the restaurant dock) without a motor.  
Structural or complex improvements  
The boat's best features It's fun, it's fast, it's pretty easy to get in and out of for swimming (especially for our eight year old). It looks beautiful and everything works smoothly.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. It has a lot of sail, which is great in light wind, a puff of wind will push it, but in heavier wind, you need to furl the jib and sometimes reef the main. You would need to do that in any sailboat I suppose, but I think the 146 requires more responsiveness from those on board, because it is sensitive to weight shifts.

The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We got it from Sound Boatworks in Connecticut. They were a pleasure to deal with, would definately deal with them again.
