Review of the Hunter 22 by Conrad Plyler

Year built 1982
Location of boat Port Orchard, WA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added Extra teak grab rails topside, a whisker pole, extra cam cleats for mainsheet traveler (Harken), new Yamaha 8 HP high-thrust outboard with electric start.
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features Easy rigging and sailing, interior room, simplicity of everything, solid construction.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Lots of minor leaks at chain plates and lifeline stanchion fastener penetrations.
Sailing characterisitcs Excellent stable sailer at 10-15 knots. Swing keel design tends to heel rapidly and snap weather helm if you get a big puff. Anything above 15 knots, reef!
Motoring characterisitcs Very good with the high-thrust long-shaft Yamaha. Being able to use the rudder and outboard pivot makes close-in handling easy.
Liveability We use it strictly as a day sailer. The interior cushions, etc., were removed by a previous owner, and we don't intend to replace them.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) We had to replace the companionway sliding hatch cover, and Hunter was very good at referring us to their supplier.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments A roller furling jib rig would be a nice addition. The foredeck is not a friendly place in a blow!
