Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Richard Becker

Year built 1982
Location of boat Fowl River, AL
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definitely. DreamBoat has been a dream come true for us.
Gear that's been added cockpit speakers, cabin fans
Structural or complex improvements none
The boat's best features Standing headroom (6'4") in the main cabin. Most everything you could want in a coastal cruiser, except air-conditioning.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. We have had trouble with the starter motor on the Yanmar diesel. I don't know if this is a problem with Yanmars, or diesels in general, or just Hunter 30's. We have spent time and money on repairs and maintenance, bu tstill have to jump start the engine every time.
Sailing characterisitcs DreamBoat sails wonderfully, in light to heavy winds. We have been in Mobile Bay and in the Gulf of Mexico in winds up to about 30 knots. She has a slight weather helm in higher winds, but not unmanageable.
Motoring characterisitcs She will not reach hull speed under power (possibly needs new bottom paint or more powerful engine). Erratic steering behavior while backing under power.
Liveability I would describe "liveability" as very good for a couple. We have spent several long weekends aboard, with very few problems, although air conditioning would be WONDERFUL. That is a function of the climate more than the boat. With a windscoop and cabin fans, most nights are relatively comfortable. The galley (alcohol stove, icebox, sink, pressure water) is acceptable for weekend trips. The head with stand-up shower is good enough. We have not tried it for more than 4 days.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not dealt with Hunter at all.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from an individual.
Other comments Wonderful boat, hence the name (DreamBoat). I would do it all over again.
