Review of the Hunter 29.5 by Robert Zolczer

Year built 1995
Location of boat Milford, CT
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, but not from the same dealer.
Gear that's been added Rigid Boom Vang, Propane Stove/oven, Autohelm ST50 Wind Indicator, 4000W Autopilot
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Dual channel bow anchor pulpit. I keep both a Danforth and CQR Plow on the bow ready to deploy.Large Cockpit and salon space for the size. It is an ideal couple's boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Plastic salon/galley cabinet latches break easily. The bow water tank wasn't foamed or strapped in and broke loose in moderate seas. The dealer (Hunter's dealer of the year) was useless. I finally got Hunter to agree to pay me after I got a local boatyard to make it right.
Sailing characterisitcs The first reef goes in at 14-16 knots wind speed, second reef at 20 knots wind speed. I've sailed in 25-30 knots with only a partial jib.
Motoring characterisitcs No problems.
Liveability We use it on weekends and for an annual 2 week cruise. It's the perfect size for one couple.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter stood by their product.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The boat was delivered one month late. This wasn't Hunter's fault, the boat arrived in early March, the salesman promised it to me the beginning of May. I finally took delivery at the end of May with some items left undone. After I took delivery, the dealer ignored me and my requests to have items repaired/made right. Eventually, Hunter made them right.
