Review of the Hunter 29.5 by David

Year built 1995
Location of boat Virginia Beach
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes
Gear that's been added no, using factory equipment. Comes with a working jib; I prefer a genoa which I will add.
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features She has a roomy cockpit and is well laid out below. The Yanmar starts well and clips along at 6/7 knots.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. She has some weather helm in a breeze. Makes it more challenging to single hand. I've had some difficulty figuring out the waste system. The GPS and knotmeter have given out but its been eleven years and I use a portable anyway. I'll rep[lace them next winter.
Sailing characterisitcs In a a breeze you have to have the jib out to turn as she tends to slide sideways with just the main. She has some weather helm but generally sails very well especially on a reach where you can exceed predicted hull speed.
Motoring characterisitcs Smooth, quiet and reliable.
Liveability The v berth forward has the best breeze if you sleep over. I'd prefer more stowage room that is easy to get to. Might install bulkhead racks in cabin above the settees. Galley is well laid out as is the head.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Called once, got prompt service on a part.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Got mine from Norton Yachts in Deltaville, Va. It was a very pleassant experience with folks who know Hunters. Mine was a trade/ex school boat and priced reasonably.
Other comments I used to own a "classic" Bristol. That was a good boat but beyond the classic part the Hunter is much more confortable, reliable and fun. She's very clean topside, so moving around is easy. I often single hand with no problem whatever. I sail weekly and race occasionally and have been very happy.
