Review of the Hunter 306 by Don Erichsen

Year built 2002
Location of boat Barnegat
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. We have only had the boat for a few months, but have been amazed at the room and layout. I have found the boat to be well made. She is very cabable of handling a storm as I got caught outside in a brewing Nor'easter. Boat survived, but I got bruised.
Gear that's been added Have added a Raymarine autopilot and PYI dripless stuffing box. Also connectected the Raymarine GPS to the autopilot using a Seatalk cable. This boat came with wind, knot and depth, Icom radio, Sony am/fm cd player, and refriderator.
Structural or complex improvements None needed at this point.
The boat's best features Features provided for the buck. FAST and FUN. Well layed out. Easy to solo.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The only minor problem I had was a leak at the swim ladder mount. The repair was easy, remove the crews and ladder. Clean the area. Recaulk using 3M 4000. Reinstall ladder and screws. No more leak.
Sailing characterisitcs Points well. Easy to reef, but reef early. Downwind performance is good, but with the B&R rig, you need to sail slighlty off as the main can not be laid flat at 90 degrees.
Motoring characterisitcs Run the Yanmar at full to prevent build up in the mixer. Dealer told me to run wide open for this reason. Boat will sink the stern under full power. Reverse walks to port so be careful.
Liveability Have spent a few nights on board. Very comfortable for the nights we have spent. I may be living on it for a few months as we are planning to move and the boat may be my temporary home until I retire.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Questions have been answered quickly.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Winter's Sailing Center in Riverside, NJ. Highly recommend. They made the sale most enjoyable.
