Review of the Hunter 28 by John Ferraro

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes!  
Gear that's been added Full spinnaker gear, larger batteries,battery charger, autohelm, wheel guard,Dutchman on main, CDI roller furler, many smaller improvements.  
Structural or complex improvements Full spinnaker gear, with hardware matching OME.  
The boat's best features Overall value-I got a lot of boat in28 feet.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I replaced the mainsheet block and cam with a ratcheting block and smoother camThis made trimming the main a one hand operation and allowed "green" crew totrim the mainsheet.Hunter should have installed red lightover nav station for night sailing.  
Sailing characterisitcs I was told the boat was a bit tender,and she does get a lot weather helm--Ihave not noticed any problems, but the boat does perform better if a reef istaken in early. In the Lower Bay localsoften need to reef in the late afternoon--even in July! The boat never performedwell down wind, but with the addition ofspinnaker gear/cruising chute hullspeed is easily obtained in a breeze.  
Motoring characterisitcs She motors well. Compared to similar sized boats in my marina she has a tighter turning radius. She backs downwell once you learn to over come the prop walk. Backing in a breeze can be difficult, but after a couple of seasons experience I feel the boat handles very well. Other sailboat owners feel the same way.  
Liveability Great for weekending--hot and cold pressure water, shore power, good sizedberths.
