Review of the Hunter 28 by Carl Snyder

Owner bought the boat in 1997  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Sure would! We were looking for a more comfortable boat than our previous boat, a Catalina 27, but didn't really want to deal with the extra effort required with a larger boat. The Hunter 28 fits our needs nicely.  
Gear that's been added I have added additional lighting in the galley and aft cabin. The previous owner had installed an Autohelm 4000, two banks of 6 volt golf cart batteries, 40 amp charger, refrigeration system, cockpit table, asym cruising spinnaker and propane heat with electronic sensors.  
Structural or complex improvements  
The boat's best features Easy handling, both under power or under sail. The abundance of natural lighting and good ventilation make the cabin very comfortable. The aft cabin is pretty spacious for a 28' boat and is very comfortable for us.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc.  
Sailing characterisitcs Above 12k of wind we usually start rolling up some of the jib and balance the helm by easing the traveler down. Above 15k we take one reef on the main. As long as the helm is balanced, the boat does not misbehave. The boat does not seem to like excessive healing (but then, neither do I)! All in all, it's very pleasant to sail.  
Motoring characterisitcs Easy to back and responds well to power and helm inputs. Motors straight under autopilot and does not wander. Motor is a bit noisy at higher RPM.Great on fuel.  
Liveability Very good for a couple. The private aft cabin allows for an occasional guest without too much problem. Accessable galley area makes it easy to fix meals. Refrigeration system is worth its weight in gold.
