Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by adam

Year built 1981
Location of boat St, Lucia
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Blue water, extended passages
Normal wind strength 23-30 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Depends on the deal
Gear that's been added Engine blew up after rebuild so I removed it. put twin yamaha 15s two strokes on transom. Much better, lots of storage, extra motor etc.one motor pushes boat on one tack to windward, two if sea's rough.Replaced all the rigging, and tangs as they were completley rotten, Almost lost my mast! added a saltwater footpump to sink from engine through hull. Two 80 watt solar panels on top of bimini supply all the power, even runs fridge during daylight, sunny days.I can actually get to the stuffing box and steering cables easy now.
Structural or complex improvements Just the motors on the transom.they are pullstart so I leave the ladder tied off a little slack, lean out pull start and have a 3ft tiller ext on outboards. Outboards turn so revering is very controllable, I use my foot for the gearshift levers and sit on the stern.Beefed up some rigging connections with stronger material.added a jib hauldown so dont have to leave cockpit to pull down headsails.
The boat's best features Lots of space for a small boat, not too much wood to rot.Easy maintainance.......now.....
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rigging tangs are cheapo metal which rots!!!!!! Even the tangs under the deck were rotten. The metal bar under the compression post is super rusty, dumb design there. Rudder and skeg looks cheapo........hope it holds! Pedastal was usty at base plate, rebuilt plate.....should be aluminum like the rest?
Sailing characterisitcs calm and easy, auto pilot on, rum n coke in hand coastal,to shrieking gusts with steep waves off headlands of islands where a double reefed main and no headsail was too much sail.
Motoring characterisitcs Twi outboards keep it clean, and quiet inside. its just the fact of travelling with gas thats scary
Liveability good for one or two but we have had six,..lots of rum needed for that
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) no
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any no
Other comments I like the toerail, the traveller on the coachroof, easy to sail, sails well, Pity about the mast post, and the other rusty parts which could have kept it maintainance free'r.
