Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1994
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? At the time yes, my family has begun to outgrow it for weekends. As a daysailor it's great.
Gear that's been added I've added a 165 genoa (best purchase to increase speed), a assymetriccal spinnaker, tiller tamer, genoa tracks, AM-FM-cassette, tillertamer, hatchboard drink holders, new interior lights, a tiller tamer,110v shore power, origo heater, and a huge gash when I tried to put it on the trailer once
Structural or complex improvements none
The boat's best features The interior room is the best feature of the 19. It is great to sit in. Even on a winters day, I go to the marina, light up the heater and relax. The cockpit is also nice. With the open back end, I don't have to worry about flooding.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The hlines have been the biggest problems, they avulsed and caused halyard jams and other stressful situations. I also had problems with the block and tackle ratio on the main sheet. I replaced it with a 4:1 unit and it works much better. The tiler also hits the motor during sharp turns, I found this out too late. The other thing that didn't work was the interior lighting. I've since replaced all interior lights and now don't have to play electric tic-tac-toe.
Sailing characterisitcs My experience will mostly be based on racing and light winds so take this for what its worth. The boat does not point particularily well. In light winds with the standard sail configuration , upwind performance was terrible! I replaced the head sail with a 165 and had better success. The boat works extremely well on reaches and with assistance of a 165 or spinnaker does well on runs.
Motoring characterisitcs Motoring will vibrate your fillings. I'm currently trying to solve this issue. The Motor controls are very easy to reach on the 19 and I have no problem manuvering in a tight marina.
Liveability Interior space is great! I often think about extended cruising on this boat. The only problem is with my family of 4, the head capacity does not last a whole weekend, which means my wife has to empty the head twice (kidding, I usually have to do it).
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) 50/50! Sometimes whem calling the factory, they've been great. Other times they have been less helpful and make me do the foot work myself. I believe they have been getting better of late.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealer was great! Kentucky Lake Sails owners were very helpful with all my prblems. A rigger took a wrong step and fell through my hatch while I was there, eventually I found a fiberglass crack I thought he caused, they replaced it no problem. By the way, the rigger lived, I dont think I would have.
