Review of the Hunter 26.5 by Steven Green

Year built 1989
Location of boat Havre de Grace, MD
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in Rive
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I would buy again. The boat is a great value. Good sailing characteristics, ample room, low maintenance, nice looking.
Gear that's been added I have added an ivertor charger, and (2) gel cell batteries for house power while underway. I have also updated the stock Hood line drive furler to a new Harken roller furler/reefer. I have added a backstay adjuster, and a 150 Genoa with adjustable tracks, as well.
Structural or complex improvements The only structural improvement was to replace the stock fixed mount bracket for the outboard motor and replacem with a new adjustable model.
The boat's best features ample cockpit, sleek lines, easy to sail and the shoal draft wing keel
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The boat has an inherant list to starboard due to the lack of gear or equipment on port side to counter the weight of galley and outboard. This was corrected when the gel cells were located on the port side aft.
Sailing characterisitcs VERYy easy light air boat, somewhat tender ovedr 15 knots. When flying the 150 genoa at 12+ knots, the boat often exceeds its hull speed. Somewhat tough to furl main sail in higher wind due to the lack of cabin top - or the presence of the large companionway cover.
Motoring characterisitcs Since it is an outboard, it is rather noisy when motoring. It is very quick under motor considering it is only a 9.9 hp. The addition of the adjustable bracket has made it easier to raise outboard. It has also helped pick up a fraction of a knot when sailing.
Liveability Only a troll could actually live aboard as the head room is only 5'2"!!!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have had a good experience with the hunter dealer in Havre de Grace.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Great boats for the money. When cared for in a reasonable manor, they will provide many years of pleasure!
