Review of the Hunter 28 by David Runkle

Year built 1991
Location of boat Havre De Grace Md.
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1994
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, this boat is an ideal boat for the Chesapeake bay and is a perfect 'first' boat, as it is with me. Great interiorlayout for weekending.
Gear that's been added AutoHelm 4000, Asym spinnaker, Schafferrolling furling
Structural or complex improvements No changes.
The boat's best features The boat sails well in up to 20 knots, before reefing is required (with 110 jib). The boat is faster than alot of 34 footers in the 10 - 15 knot range. The shallow draft is great for sailing the upper bay. Over all this is a great little boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have had some minor problems with leaks around the port.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails well and fast. I have found this boat to be very dry going to windard in havy air. (I was going to purchase a dodger but decided I didn't need it). The boat misbehaves when at anchor, it sails from side to side when the wind is above 10 knots.
Motoring characterisitcs I find it easy to handle when docking.
Liveability Plenty of room for up to five for an overnoighter. For extended crusing, 5 days or more, I would limit the crew to three.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) When I first purchased the boat I called Hunterwith general information questions and even though I baught the boat used they took the time to answer my questions.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The broker almost sank my boat the day I bought it. The water tank had a leak that hedidn't know about. On the day I purchased the boat he was filling the water tank before I had arrived to pick it up. He left the boat unattended with the water running. When I arrived the bow of the boat was down about eight inches. The locker under the V-berth was full of water and the cushions were soaked.
