Review of the Hunter 306 by Donald Sauret

Year built 2002
Location of boat Apollo Beach, FL
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. This may well be the ideal boat for us!
Gear that's been added New batteries (3), Xantrex 1500W inverter, Ocean Breeze 12700 AC/heat, Raymarine autopilot, Garmin plotting GPS, custom cabinets, microwave.
Structural or complex improvements AC installation was a serious project that took a lot of planning, and simple cabinets that would be easy in a house are not so easy fitted to compound curved surfaces! Autopilot was a relative "piece of cake."
The boat's best features Easy to sail, performs well in light air, most of the features of a larger boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. We are the second owners of this boat, and most of the problems such as water leaks were fairly easily found and even easier to fix. Nothing major has been found, either by me or our surveyor.
Sailing characterisitcs Light air performance is crucial on the West coast of Florida, and this boat works well. It's easy to sail, points well, and still behaves in stronger wind conditions.
Motoring characterisitcs It's tough to call a Yanmar 2 cylinder engine "smooth," but it easily pushes the boat to hull speed, and will actually back up where you point it! Noise is tolerable, and you can easily carry on a normal conversation while motoring.
Liveability Most of the comforts of home, and no solicitors! For two people, there is plenty of storage and living space. The cockpit is good for you and a couple of friends. A couple with one or two kids should make out fine for a few days, likewise two couples.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Sailor's Wharf in St. Pertersburg did a fine job helping me find the boat I wanted, and was altogether a good experience.
Other comments Unless my friend Bob Johnson wills me a new Island Packet, I'll probably have this boat for a long time.
