Review of the Hunter 25 by Bill Ryan

Year built 1978
Location of boat P.E.I. Canada
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? No, I imagine I will step on up to a thirty after a few years but would recommend the 25 as a good starter or intermediate vessel.
Gear that's been added New outboard (9.9 four stroke Honda),uniden depth,handheld vhf,autohelm 1000,cockpit cushions,new salon cushions and covers,dodger,propane stove,and am considering furling.
Structural or complex improvements Plan to add compression post. took hull down to jelcoat and applied two coats of interprotect 2000e. epoxied hull to keel joint and entire keel.New companion way boards and bilge pump. New rudder bearing.
The boat's best features roomy for size, private head, thick hull and deck and stable with the 4' draft.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. not enough head room, impossible Kenyon alcohol stove, narrow sidewalks and poor wiring.
Sailing characterisitcs Good performance when sails reefed to match wind up to 20 knots
Motoring characterisitcs Easy on feul but prop tends to dry out if you push too hard in the chopy stuff.
Liveability My wife, 15 year old son, 2 schnausers and I had no problems on a two week vacation last year but the weather was good and we weren't cooped up inside at all.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) They were friendly and helpfull but I was able to make the Part I needed using local materials (Rudder Bearing)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments The first sailing boat model they made and it is tough.
