Review of the Hunter 36 by Ron Helwege

Year built 2004
Location of boat Coeur d' Alene, ID
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. We had an opportunity to look at several 36 foot boats at one show. The Hunter was the obvious choice.
Gear that's been added No
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Accomodations, handleing. Love the in mast furler.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Stress cracks in gel coat. Noisy windless. Diesel loosing coolant.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails well in all conditions. Furling main is great in heavy air.
Motoring characterisitcs Boat has 3 bladed prop. Plenty of thrust. Handles well.
Liveability Very good for two people.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Responsive
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Like most dealers very accomodating initially. Got a little slow towards the end of the warrenty period.
Other comments Over all I think Hunter makes a very fine product. Some areas, however, could use improvement. I would prefer to replace the two large overhead fixed ports with one opening port. Finish work below is a little rough and cheap in some areas. Gel coat could use improvement. Hunter should loose the cheap vinyl pin stripping. Looks bad.
