Review of the Hunter 36_80-82 by Ross

Year built 1981
Location of boat South Carolina
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Totally! This Hunter has many great features for extended cruising and live aboard. The hull is massively strong with lots of room. No way I could ever fill this boat up, Just too much space which means that I don't have to pack stuff in.
Gear that's been added Battery Charger. AC Lights. Microwave. LP Stove Top. Smoke & Monoxide Alarm. Solar Vents, Refrige Unit.
Structural or complex improvements None needed.
The boat's best features Sailing abillity and Interior volume and Headroom. Ladies really like the Head, say its a real head compared to most. Large water tanks. Engine access is excellent, from the side, front and top. Tons of room around the engine. All the space in the aft end of the boat and access through the Lazarets into huge space. All major systems are easy to get at for inspections and service. Deck hardware, winches, cleats and blocks are backed up by Aluminum plates molded into the deck. This is a superior method that allows cutting threads into the backing plate for bolts and screws to thread into. No chance of hidden rot working on plywood backing blocks. And no unsightly through bolts everywhere down below. No blisters!
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Typical of the type for the year manufactured. Desiged to be put together once and hard to get at some of the stuff for upgrades and repairs. The Throttle Cable was installed poorly and routed through a Pinch Zone that crushed it and led to its premature failure. No problem tho, just routed the new one correctly. It was easy to get at, even for a 6'+ guy. Some gel coat crazing on deck nothing out of the ordinary for a boat of its age.
Sailing characterisitcs Feel the power! This boat really sails, it has the stiffness to stand up in a breeze and the fine entry , weight and modern underbody to power through a chop. Very easy on the helm and lets you know when she is over canvased, but can tolarate being over canvased for those who like to push things a little harder than most.
Motoring characterisitcs Not over powered by any means, this is a sailing auxiluary. The power plant easily moves the boat out of harbor and onto the sailing grounds and back again when the sailing is over.
Liveability Excellent! Plenty of room, especially headroom. Lays well to its anchor and is quiet when tied up in a slip. Tons of storage space too. All berths are long enough for 6'+ people and comfortable. The head has elbow room and lots of storage. 10 large opening ports and 2 overhead hatches let in so much light and air a person can really relax down below.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Not dealt yet.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Broker did a good job, boat basically sells itself.
Other comments This is a good basic boat that is easy to work on and suitable for live aboard long term cruising. The boat is massively built and solid under foot and at sea.
